How To Utilize The Power Of Words

We use words all the time, we use them to convey our ideas to other people and influence them. Countless leaders used words to motivate people and to ultimately cause them to behave in a certain way. What we aren’t always aware of is that words are influencing us the moment we utter them.


Did you know that Eskimos have more then one word to describe snow? It is believed that snow plays a bigger part in their lives, they have more experiences regarding it and therefore more words to describe it. You can learn a lot just from listening to someone else talk. For example if he uses the word fear or anxiety a lot it means that it’s probably a big part of his experience.


We all know how changing our job title to something like manager can improve our feelings even if we do the same job and earn the same salary. The only thing changed was the name that gave us a feeling of importance. When we feel better we are likely to preform better.


Words created a lot of our beliefs and they can also reveal them. For instance if someone says “I’m that way because…” or “if you go out without a coat you’ll catch a cold” they’re expressing their beliefs. Lets do a little experiment, say the word fear for 30 seconds. How do you feel? Are you afraid? To cancel the negative effect say the word love for a minute.


This exercise shows us that by changing our words we can instantly change how we feel and thus change how we act. I want to clarify that words just like emotions are an energy form they aren’t good or bad, However some words will assist you to achieve what you desire and others won’t.


Different people use different words to describe the same situations and therefore they experience different emotions which causes them to act differently. What changed wasn’t the event but rather the words they used.


When we use a certain word it becomes our experience even if it wasn’t at the beginning. We categorize our emotions to ease our thinking process, However by doing so we force the category on the emotion. For example if you felt uncomfortable and you called it fear it will become fear.


One of the reasons that people become similar to their friends and people that they spend a lot of time with is because they begin to use their friends words. Moreover If you don’t have a way of representing something then you can’t experience it. In some native American cultures there isn’t a word for lying, The concept simply doesn’t exist. As a result they never lie.



Words to use

In order to change our lives we need to know what words to use instead of the “negative” ones. In addition just like some of the native Americans we need to completely omit certain words from our vocabulary.


Instead of I hate something use I prefer something else. Instead of I fear something use I feel uncomfortable or excited when this happens. Instead of saying I’m angry say I’m slightly bothered. When someone asks you how do you feel or how do you do instead of saying OK you can say excellent or wonderful, That will surely change how you feel.


Instead of saying it stinks say it’s a little smelly. Instead of disappointment use delay. Instead of lonely use available. Instead of failure say feedback or learning. Instead of depression say not really at my peak.


These are just some of the examples you can use. Make it a game, play with it and try to come up with funny and positive alternatives. It will help you moderate your negative feelings and increase the positive. This doesn’t mean that you will never feel anger or fear, these emotions are useful in certain situations. It means that anger and fear won’t be your first choice.

Poem : F A M I L Y


I ran into a stranger as he passed by,
"Oh excuse me please" was my reply.


He said, "Please excuse me too;
I wasn't watching for you."


We were very polite, this stranger and I.
We went on our way and we said goodbye.


But at home a different story is told..
How we treat our loved ones, young and old.


Later that day, cooking the evening meal,
My son stood beside me very still.


When I turned, I nearly knocked him down.
"Move out of the way," I said with a frown.


He walked away, his little heart broken.
I didn't realize how harshly I'd spoken.


While I lay awake in bed,
God's still small voice came to me and said,


"While dealing with a stranger, common courtesy you use,
but the family you love, you seem to abuse.


Go and look on the kitchen floor,
You'll find some flowers there by the door.


Those are the flowers he brought for you.
He picked them himself: pink, yellow and blue.


He stood very quietly not to spoil the surprise,
you never saw the tears that filled his little eyes."


By this time, I felt very small,
And now my tears began to fall.


I quietly went and knelt by his bed;
"Wake up, little one, wake up," I said.


"Are these the flowers you picked for me?"
He smiled, "I found 'em, out by the tree.


I picked 'em because they're pretty like you.
I knew you'd like 'em, especially the blue."


I said, "Son, I'm very sorry for the way I acted today;
I shouldn't have yelled at you that way."


He said, "Oh, Mom, that's okay.
I love you anyway."


I said, "Son, I love you too,
and I do like the flowers, especially the blue."



FAMILY..

So what is it behind the story?

Are you aware that if we died tomorrow, the company that we are working for could easily replace us in a matter of days..

But the family we left behind will feel the loss for the rest of their lives.

And come to think of it, we pour ourselves more into work than into our own family, an unwise investment indeed, don't you think?

The Soldier and the Nun

A soldier ran up to a nun, out of breath, he asked, "Please may I hide under your skirt? I'll explain later." The nun agreed.

A moment later two military police ran up and asked, "Sister have you seen a soldier?" The nun replied, "He went that way." After the MPs ran off, the soldier crawled out from under the skirt and said, "I can't thank you enough sister. You see, I don't want to go to Iraq."

The nun said she understood completely.

The soldier added, "I hope I'm not rude, but you have a great pair of legs."

The nun replied, "If you had looked a little higher, you would have seen a great pair of balls.... I don't want to go to Iraq either."


Amelia's New-born


..It's been 4 days since Angel left for KL
for her sister's convocation and
she'll be back only by tomorrow.
Anyway, she already missed out the chance
to see Amelia's new-born appeared at
Public Bank Bandar Bayan Baru Branch
this afternoon around 4.30pm.
For those who doesn't know,
she loves baby very much
and in order to let her see the baby
as soon as possible,

Chinese Man Taking A Loan


A Chinese man walks into a bank in New York City
and asks for a loan officer.


He tells the loan officer that he is going to China on business for
two weeks and needs to borrow $5,000.


The bank officer tells him that the bank will need some form of
security for the loan, so the Chinese man hands over the keys
to a new Ferrari parked on the street in front of the bank.


He produces the title and everything checks out.


The loan officer agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan.


The bank's president and its officers all enjoy a good laugh
at the Chinese for using a $250,000 Ferrari as collateral
against a $5,000 loan.


An employee of the bank then drives the Ferrari into the
bank's underground garage and parks it there.


Two weeks later, the Chinese returns, repays the $5,000
and the interest, which comes to $15.41.


The loan officer says,
"Sir, we are very happy to have had your business,
and this transaction has worked out very nicely,
but we are a little puzzled. While you were away,
we checked you out and found that you are a multi-millionaire.
What puzzles us is, why would you bother to borrow $5,000?".


The Chinese replies:
"Where else in New York City can I park my car
for two weeks for only $15.41 and
expect it to be there when I return?"



Ahh.. you see, the mind of a Chinese...

to attend her sister convocation,

and i already started to miss her . .

. . anyway, while i'm surfing the net just now,

A little boy asked his mother, "Why are you crying?"

"Because I'm a woman," she told him.

"I don't understand," he said.

His Mom just hugged him and said, "And you never will."



Later the little boy asked his father,

"Why does mother seem to cry for no reason?"

"All women cry for no reason," was all his dad could say.

The little boy grew up and became a man, still wondering why women cry.



Finally he put in a call to God.

When God got on the phone, he asked, "God, why do women cry so easily?"

God said: "When I made the woman she had to be special.

I made her shoulders strong enough to carry the weight of the world,

yet gentle enough to give comfort.

I gave her an inner strength to endure childbirth

and the rejection that many times comes from her children.

I gave her a hardness that allows her to keep going when everyone else gives up,

and take care of her family through sickness and fatigue without complaining.

I gave her the sensitivity to love her children under any and all circumstances,

even when her child has hurt her very badly.

I gave her strength to carry her man through his faults

and fashioned her from his rib to protect his heart.

I gave her wisdom to know that a good man never hurts a woman,

but sometimes tests her strengths and her resolve

to stand beside him unfalteringly.


And finally, I gave her a tear to shed.

This is hers exclusively to use whenever it is needed."

"You see my son," said God,

"the beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears,

the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair.

The beauty of a woman must be seen in her eyes,

because that is the doorway to her heart - the place where love resides."


好話 v.s 壞話

好話 v.s 壞話 … 只在一念之間



說件 「鮮事」給您聽──

有個丈夫跟太太親熱,撫摸著太太,很有情趣地讚美:

「妳的皮膚摸起來真細,絕不像四十歲的女人。」

太太笑: 「是啊!最近摸過的人都這麼說。」

『啪!』 一記耳光。

丈夫吼道: 「妳最近讓多少人摸過?妳老實招來!」

太太摀著臉,哭著喊:

「大家是這麼說啊!每個護膚中心的小姐都這麼說。」


這是真事,但是怎麼看都像笑話對不對?

問題是,當你細心觀察就會發現,我們周遭充滿這樣的笑話。


只因為一句話沒說對,就把喜劇變成了悲劇,

把眼看就要辦成的好事變成了壞事。


「話」人人會說,只是不見得人人會說話;

有話好說,只是不見得人人說好話。


不說好話的道理很簡單──因為他沒有多想一想。



舉個例子: 最近我有個朋友,在他新居的後院搭了間工具房。

那工具房是買現成的材料,再自己拼裝的,

專門用來放剪草機、鏟子、鋤頭這些整理花園的工具。

可是我這朋友興高采烈地才拼裝到一半,他的鄰居竟然隔著牆喊:

「你亂蓋房子,是違法的。」

我這朋友氣極了,跑到建管處去問,

得到的答案是蓋十呎乘十呎以內的工具屋,不違法;只有超過,才違法。

他回去量了量自己買的工具屋,是十呎乘十二呎,多了兩呎,

於是拿去退掉,換成合法的尺寸。

工具屋搭好了,他跑來對我說:

「我非要去糗糗我那鄰居不可,我要告訴他中國人不好欺負,

我去政府單位問過了,現在搭的絕對合法,歡迎他去告!」

「你何必這麼說呢?」我勸他: 「您何不換個方式,對他說:

『真是謝謝你,幸虧你提醒我,不然我的工具屋多了兩呎,

因為違法得拆除,就白蓋了。』

你不是照樣讓他知道你去問過政府單位,現在是合法建築了嗎?」

朋友想了想,覺得有理,照辦了。

結果不但沒有得罪鄰居,還交上了好朋友。



再說個故事。 有個人和他太太為了一點小事吵架,要離婚,

起因居然不但不是壞事,還是好事。

那一天,他太太買到一條上好的石斑魚,特別打電話到辦公室:

「你離開辦公室的時候,打個電話回來,我好下鍋蒸,

這石斑魚,多一分鐘少一分鐘都不成。」

那太太想得很好,丈夫出門,她蒸魚,丈夫進門,正好上桌。

偏偏她丈夫下班的時候,才打完電話,說要出門了,

就碰上個客戶突然造訪,耽誤了二十分鐘。


「糟了!」送走客戶,丈夫心想,趕緊又撥個電話回家:

「對不起,臨時有事,現在才能走。」

太太一聽,在那頭跳了起來:

「什麼?你還在辦公室?

你不知道魚涼了不好吃嗎?你知道這條石斑魚多少錢嗎?」

丈夫沒多吭氣,匆匆忙忙開車回去,一路想,一路急,加上晚了,

餓,胃都急疼了,路上還差點撞了人。

進門沒好氣地說一句: 「魚涼了就涼了嘛!熱熱不就得了?」

太太也沒好氣:「你是沒命吃好魚,以後給你吃涼的。」

兩個人當然「吵翻了」 ,拉開嗓子吼,把孩子都嚇哭了,

一條好好的石斑魚,放在桌上,誰都沒吃,還差點離了婚。



你說,他們是會說話嗎?

如果那作太太的,能像我那搭工具屋的朋友,換個角度說:

「別急!別急!魚涼了,微波爐熱一分鐘就成了,

開車小心點,我們等你。」



會說話與不會說話,常在那一念之間。

一念之間,他懂得忍、懂得退一步想,想想壞話怎麼好說,

狠話怎麼柔說,就可能有個喜劇的結局。

那一念之間,他毫不考慮地脫口而出,則可能是個悲劇的結尾。

雖然許多人讚美我口才好,但是我從不這麼認為,

而且覺得自己年輕的時候總是說錯話。


即使到今天,我每天晚上還是常把白天說的話想一想,

檢討一下,是不是有不妥當,或者「有更好的說話方法」。
